TO BE A PILOT AS A HOBBY YOU WILL REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING

Private Pilot License

Plan to invest about 5,000 to 7,000
Plan to take about 3 to 18 months depending on the frequency of your lessons

Instrument Rating
Plan to invest about 7,000 to 10,000
A required add-on if you plan to fly in weather less than 3nm visibility and less
than 1000 foot ceilings, it also makes you a much better Pilot even if you don't
fly in these conditions

FOR A CAREER PILOT YOU WILL REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING

Private Pilot License
Instrument Rating
Commercial Pilot License
Certified Flight Instructor License
Optional but highly recommended if you
plan to eventually make money at it, besides you need this to build hours unless you have an unlimited supply of cash to buy your hours
Multi Engine Rating  Most airlines will require this unless you plan to fly single
engine aircraft.  Can be added later on after you have built up the minimum
First Officer requirements of at least 500 hours.
Multi Engine Time Building  50 to 100 hours of experience makes you more
marketable for that interview

Plan to invest a total of about 25,000 to 45,000 or as high as 60,000 at some
really big and overkill flight schools
